HOW, WHY, and WHEN YOU SHOULD BE CLEANING YOUR SLEEPING BAGS
22nd August, 2022
Sleeping bags keep us warm and cosy during our camping trips, but once our trip is over, it’s really important to give them some TLC so you can make sure they last the test of time and are ready for your next use.
Why should you clean your sleeping bag?
Just as you would clean your bed sheets, you need to clean your sleeping bags too. Because they are often used during outdoor camping trips, dirt, body oils and general bacteria will build up over time. And let’s face it, no one wants to sleep amongst that. Make it a point to clean them regularly.
When should you clean your sleeping bag?
If properly cared for, sleeping bags can usually last for a few seasons without needing to be washed. But that being said, do clean it if it gets dirty. After a camping trip is the best time to give it that deeper clean so that you can enjoy it spick and span in time for your next trip.
How to clean your sleeping bags
- Only use a front loading washing machine on a gentle cycle
- Only use a mild wool wash that won’t damage the fibres of your bag
- After you’re done with the wash cycle, run your washer again with only water to make sure that the soap’s rinsed off completely. If your washing machine has a rinse cycle option, you can run this cycle to remove the remaining water from the sleeping bag
- Carefully remove the bag from the machine and transfer it to the dryer
- Tumble dry at a low heat
- The best way to wash your sleeping bag is to hand wash with a mild wool wash and lay flat to dry
- Take note that the bag must be completely dry before storing it. Even after a gentle dryer cycle, you can lay it out for a few days to really ensure it’s dry before packing it away.
If you’re out camping:
- Make sure to remove any dirt or particles as soon as you notice it, and then spot-wash the fabric with a mild wool wash to prevent it from damage
- Air dry your sleeping bag by draping it over your tent or on a clean and dry surface
- A great way to avoid dirtying it while camping could be to use a sleeping bag liner that serves as a barrier between you and your bag, to keep it clean and to provide extra comfort and warmth while you sleep.
