Hiking for Beginners: The Ultimate Guide
16th March, 2022
Hiking is not just a way to get closer to nature but also a way to reap many physical and mental benefits, as it’s an activity that makes use of the entire body. If you’re a beginner, you may find the thought of being out in the wilderness daunting, but you’ll soon find that hiking can be enjoyable (even enthralling!), especially if you prepare well.
Here’s how you can make your first hike the first of many more to come!
Check the schedule and the weather forecast
There's no doubt that the weather can make or break your hiking trip. If the weather is predicted to be torrential, it’s best to avoid going. Hiking in wet, miserable conditions can not only be dangerous, but also a bad time. But if there’s just a slight chance of rain, you can still prepare to have a great time by packing rainy day essentials like dry gear, rain caps and rain jackets, and ensure you leave enough time to make it back to your camp before dark. Another thing to stay on top of is the overall hiking schedule. Make sure the trail you choose will be open on the day you plan to go; some trails need to be booked prior to departure.
Pack your essentials
Though what you bring ultimately depends on how long you’re spending on the trip, the general essentials remain the same:
- Navigation tools, like maps and a compass
- Sun protection, like sunscreen, sunglasses and a hat
- Insulation and extra clothes
- Light sources, like torches (don’t forget extra batteries)
- First-aid kit
- Fire-starter kits, like waterproof matches and candles
- Army knife and multi-purpose tools
- Food
- Water
Ensure that you have a substantial water supply as hydration is crucial in hikes. You need to consume at least a litre of water every 2 hours of rigorous hiking. Also bring easy-to-eat snacks that you can munch on while on the go, like trail mix and energy bars.
Dress appropriately
Dressing well gives you the comfort you need to conquer the trail. Wear comfortable socks and hiking shoes that will protect you from blisters caused by long walks. Avoid wearing cotton shirts as they easily get damp and can leave you sticky and cold when the temperature drops. Opt for synthetic fibres that can regulate your temperature. Bringing an extra jacket for layering in case of cold winds or light rain too is also a great idea!
