Visit Tasmania. Your complete guide to hikes and camping in Tassie
26th March, 2021
Tasmania is the only island state in Australia and it is a popular hiking and camping site due to its craggy wilderness and fabulous vistas. Its raw beauty is best explored on your own two feet, and you’ll be sure to be in awe of its winding walks and trails.
It is called one of the world’s last accessible wilderness frontiers and has the cleanest air on earth! That’s why there’s no better place to get your nature fix than Tassie. Here are some of our must-see sights in Tasmania.
Long-distance hike in the Overland Track
The 6-day trek in the Overland Track is for those who are in it for an epic journey. The 65km track is full of breathtaking views, from Ronny Creek in the gorgeous Cradle Mountain to the glittering Lake St. Clair.
If you’re visiting during peak season, between 1 October to 31 May, you will have to pay the park entry fee and the Overland Track fee before signing in on the log books and walking the trail from north to south. If you’re visiting during winter, you only have to pay the park entry fee.
There are huts available along the way, but their availability is not guaranteed, so serious hikers should consider packing their own backpacking tent. One last thing to keep in mind is that the Overland Track experiences quick weather changes, from sunny one moment to freezing the next, so it’s best that you pack enough layers so you’re ready to tackle whichever temperature nature throws your way.
Enjoy the beach vibes on Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach Loop
The east coast of Tasmania is an absolute treat for anyone who loves the beach. For a picture-perfect hike, try the Wineglass Bay and Hazards Beach Loop. You can finish the hike in around 5 hours and enjoy clear blue waters and incredible shorelines throughout the entire journey.
To guarantee a fun walk, pack your sunscreen, some water and snacks and your beachwear!
Wine and dine around the Tamar Valley
For those of you who prefer to spend your time on holiday eating and drinking, check out the Tamar Valley wine region! It’s approximately 50km long and home to over 20 vineyards and has been named one of the world’s top ten wine routes! The cool climate in the area makes it the ideal location for the tasting of exquisite wines, such as Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Pinot Gris and Pinot Noir. You can purchase some bottles from different vineyards along the route as well.
