12th January, 2022
Summer is one of the best times to explore the great outdoors, from rocky summits to lush forests and breathtaking mountaintops. Armed with the best hiking gear in Australia, here are the top 5 hikes to embark on this summer.
The Overland Track, TAS
The 6-day trek in Tasmania’s Overland Track is perfect for the keenest of backpackers. Every step in the 65km track will give you something to fawn upon, from the awe-inspiring vistas of the Cradle Mountain and the crystal blue water of Lake St. Clair. During summer, the wildflowers are in full bloom so you have that to look forward to as well!
Fraser Island Great Walk, QLD
A World Heritage-listed location, this 90km walk brings you to fascinating subtropical forests and amazing mangroves. You can enjoy the cool breeze as you walk along the beaches or cool down with a swim in the glittering blue Lake McKenzie. Located in the world’s largest sand island, the Great Walk also offers fantastic views of the sand dunes over Lake Wabby.
Mount Gower, NSW
Fancy a tough hike to the highest point on Lord Howe Island? Mouth Gower stands at 875m tall and offers a 14km roundtrip adventure full of sweeping views of fern-filled forests teeming with wildlife. The island has no more than 500 residents, making it the perfect destination for unspoiled natural beauty. Once you reach the peak, it will feel like you’re really on top of the world!
The Cape to Cape Track, WA
Over in Western Australia, no adventure is complete if you don’t try out the Cape to Cape Track. A staggering 123 kilometres in length, it is the longest track in Margaret River, making it a popular choice for committed hikers who want a serious challenge. You’ll pass through stunning limestone caves and gorgeous forests, and you can take a dip in the fabulous beaches. Beginner hikers can still get a taste of the beauty the area has to offer, by doing one of the shorter trails or hard-paved sections.
Larapinta Trail, NT
The famous 223km trail takes you through the West MacDonnell Ranges. You’ll pass through the summit of Mount Sonder and see spectacular sights of the Redbank Gorge, Standley Chasm and Count’s Point. It can take up to 14 days for experienced hikers to tackle the entire trail, though you can pick any of the 12 available sections according to your time constraints and hiking level. The trail offers glorious outback vistas and postcard-worthy desert landscapes.
