Visit QLD. Your complete guide to hikes and camping in Queensland.
26th May, 2021
Queensland is nicknamed the Sunshine State for its ever-pleasant climate, fantastic beaches and gorgeous coastlines. It’s also home to lush rainforests teeming with flora and fauna, sweeping outback plains and magnificent mountain ranges.
There’s so much to see and so much to do for both casual and experienced hikers. To get you started, here are some of our favourite spots that you should check out for your QLD adventure.
Chill in Girraween National Park
Girraween National Park features gravity-defying rock formations carved by Mother Nature herself. Stretching across 117sq km, the park has an extremely impressive assortment of granite boulders as well as 750 types of plants, treating you to a burst of colour during spring and summer. In winter you are treated to the magnificent sight of snow caps frosting over boulders, transforming the landscape into a picture-perfect wonderland.
The park has plenty of trails to offer, ranging from short strolls to day-long hikes. There are hot showers and toilets available, as well as picnic tables and communal wood BBQs. If you want to sleep indoors but still get a taste of the wilderness, you can check into Girraween Environmental Lodge. For the full camping experience, we recommend the Castle Rock and the Bald Rock Creek campsites.
Epic multi-day hike in the Thorsborne Trail
Located in the uninhabited Hinchinbrook Island, the 32km Thorsborne Trail is an off-the-grid adventure featuring dramatic landscapes. To protect the island’s biodiversity, only 40 people are permitted to be there at any given time. The scenery is so diverse that you’re treated to thick rainforests in one direction and white, sandy beaches in the other.
To make this trip as seamless as possible, don’t forget to take mosquito repellent, sunscreen and hand sanitiser. Pack your bathers so you can jump into the creeks and waterfalls. And as always, a raincoat is a must as the weather here can turn at any moment.
Enjoy the scenery in Lamington National Park
Having been around for more than 100 million years, the rainforests of Lamington National Park are ancient, lush and simply spectacular. With over 160km of bushwalking trails, you’re in for a real treat with an assortment of landscapes spanning from waterfalls, rainforest and volcanic origins.
For new hikers, we suggest the Centenary Track. Fully paved and taking a mere 30 minutes to complete, it starts from the Green Mountains car park and connects with the Python Rock. It also connects right into the Morals Falls track for those who want a longer and more difficult walk.
Experienced hikers can challenge themselves to the Border Track. It’s 21.4km one way and connects Binna Burra and Green Mountains for a simply phenomenal view.
